How to Read a Resistor Color Code

The value of a resistor is usually determined by the color code of the resistor. If the resistor is physically too small to print the numbers on the body, then you will get the numbers using the color-coded ribbon printed on the body that shows the ohmic value. Resistor has 4 color bands as follows: Red, Purple, Orange, Gold. Determine the ohmic value using the resistor color code.

Then this resistor has a nominal value of 27 k ohms with a tolerance of 5%. Tolerance means that in fact the resistor can have a maximum value.


Rmax = 27 k ohms - 5% of 27 k ohms

= 25 650 ohms or

= 25.65 k ohms
